Blues Blank Sharks 5–0, Snap Vineyard Win Streak in Bristol

Bristol, Connecticut - Under clear skies and a comfortable 75 degrees at the 5:00 p.m. first pitch, with a light northwest breeze drifting across Muzzy Field's old brick facade, the Martha's Vineyard Sharks ran into the one thing that stops even an apex predator: still water. The bats never surfaced. Bristol's staff carved up the Vineyard lineup for nine strikeouts on a five-hit shutout, and the Blues took advantage of an uncharacteristically leaky Sharks defense to win 5–0, snapping Martha's Vineyard's winning streak and dropping the Sharks to 25–8 on the NECBL season.

For four innings it was a pitchers' duel worthy of the Sunday matinee crowd of 743. Sharks starter Michael Devenney matched Bristol's Frank Spirito zero for zero through three, scattering three hits over four innings and not allowing an earned run. But the game turned on the little things — and the errors. Bristol broke through in the fourth when Thomas Zwirecki lined a single through the left side to bring home Antonio Ducatelli with an unearned run.

The Blues stretched it in the fifth against the Vineyard bullpen. Nick Flores ripped a double down the left-field line to score Sean Britt and make it 2–0. In the sixth, Britt returned the favor with a two-run single to right — both runs the product of Vineyard miscues, one unearned — and suddenly it was 4–0. Zwirecki added his second RBI single of the day in the seventh, plating Ducatelli again for the final margin. All told, four Sharks errors gifted Bristol three unearned runs; of the five runs charged to Vineyard pitching, only two were earned.

The Sharks had their chances early but couldn't land the bite. Griffin Crain led the way with two hits from the leadoff spot, and Ethan Gonzalez doubled, but the Vineyard stranded seven and went hitless when it mattered. Spirito worked 3.1 innings with four strikeouts, Jesse Specter (W, 1-0) escaped the middle innings untouched, and the Bristol relay of Sam Michel, Liam Diehl and James Mulvaney closed the door, with Mulvaney striking out two in a perfect ninth.

Devenney (L, 2-2) deserved better, finishing with four innings of three-hit, no-earned-run baseball. Angel Cruz and Warner Gearhart covered the final four frames.

The tidy 2-hour, 26-minute affair was a rare quiet day for a Vineyard club that still owns one of the best records in the NECBL at 25–8. And as any islander knows, sharks don't stay still for long. The Keene Swamp Bats come to the Shark Tank Monday night at 7:05PM.
