Farewell and Adieu, Sanford: Sharks Blank the North's Best for a Fourth Straight
Ryan Gold and Ben Waterman combined on a two-hit shutout as the Martha's Vineyard Sharks took the doubleheader nightcap 2–0 to run their winning streak to four.
Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts - Under the same clear summer skies that greeted the afternoon opener, a season-high crowd of 2,501 filled The Shark Tank and watched the Martha's Vineyard Sharks complete a doubleheader sweep of the Sanford Mainers — the leaders of the NECBL's Northern Division — with a 2–0 shutout. The win was the Sharks' fourth in a row, their third winning streak of the season, and it pushed their league-best record to 20–5 while sending a loud message to the top of the standings.
If the first game was about the bats, the second belonged to the arms. Starter Ryan Gold was dominant, carving up the Mainers over five innings while allowing just one hit, walking two, and striking out seven to earn his first win of the summer. He never let Sanford's lineup find its footing, stranding the few runners who reached and setting the tone for a night when a single run always felt like it might be enough.
The Sharks gave him that run early. In the bottom of the first, Carter Bentley worked his way aboard and came around to score when Nick Rubino reached on a fielding error by the Sanford first baseman — an unearned run, but one that put the home team in front for good. Vineyard added an insurance run in the fourth: with Rubino aboard, Mason Scott lined a single to right field to bring him home and make it 2–0.
That was all Gold and the bullpen would need. Ben Waterman entered to close it out and was every bit as sharp, tossing two scoreless innings with a lone hit and three strikeouts to lock down his third save of the season. Together, the two Sharks pitchers surrendered just two hits and piled up 10 strikeouts, blanking one of the league's best offenses on its own terms.
It wasn't a night of fireworks so much as a clinic in pitching and defense — timely gloves, including a trio of double plays turned behind the mound, and a bullpen that refuses to break. Carter Bentley also stayed busy on the bases with two stolen bases, a small-ball spark to complement the shutdown pitching. With the sweep in hand and the streak now at four, the Sharks look every bit like a team hitting its stride at exactly the right time.
