South Kingstown, RI- Eight walks came back to haunt the Ocean State Waves, as the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks took advantage and took Saturday’s contest from the Waves 5-3.
Xavier Vargas (Woodhaven, NY/ URI) would break open the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to right center, his first of the year, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead.
The long ball would continue in the third. Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, CT/ New Haven) would tie with his first homerun of the year, but the Waves would respond with a two-run homerun via Casey Dana (Montgomery, NY/ Seton Hall), making it 3-2 Waves.
After tying it in the top of the fourth, Martha’s Vineyard would break the game open in the top of the 7th. Following two walks and a single, the Sharks would score on a very odd play. Dana would catch a pop-up, and continue over the temporary fence and out of play, allowing all runners to advance one base. Ryan Hogan (Saugus, CA/ St. John’s) would single, scoring one. Martha’s Vineyard would then score their fifth run following a throwing error from Daniel Seres (Canton, GA/ Kennesaw St).
The loss for the Waves is charged to Zach Fogell (Cumberland, RI/ Brown) who lasted one inning, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two. The win for Martha’s Vineyard went to Daniel Hegarty (Leawood, KS/ Kansas), going six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while only walking one and striking out five. Sharks improve to 1-2 on the young season dropping the forst two Gmaes 3-1 to Holyoke and 6-3 to Mystic. Sharks are on a five game homestand starting Monday June 10th.
